Barca see signs of criminality in De Jong, Lenglet, Pique and Ter Stegen renewals

On October 20, 2020, just a week before resigning cornered by the motion of no confidence, Josep Maria Bartomeu renewed Ter Stegen, Lenglet, Pique and De Jong. An extension of contracts which sought to reduce the weight of the payroll in the midst of a pandemic. The club saved some 18 million on wages, 30 in total including the write-offs of Lenglet and De Jong. But it wasn’t a simple postponement as Bartomeu’s savings last year meant an extra €311m cost to the club.

Lenglet, with a contract until 2023, and Ter Stegen (2022) renewed for three years and De Jong (2024) and Pique (2022) have extended two runs. The four renewals were carried out a few hours before the setting up of the negotiating table with the rest of the workforce, which was to discuss formulas to lower the cost of wages in the midst of a pandemic and which agreed to postpone 122 million salaries and 50 of variables , with which the total savings were 172. The renewal of Pique had been in this line, receiving the same salary he had for more years, but in the case of Lenglet, Ter Stegen and De Jong, they went down a bit this first season but then they came to almost double their emoluments.

Joan Laporta’s board of directors, which is studying to bring him to the prosecution, has already transferred these four actors who see signs of criminality and unfair administration in these contracts. He offered to return to previous salaries, stressing that otherwise he will take him to court. Pique, the only one not to have benefited from the renewal, is for the moment the only one to have agreed to do so. The central defender is negotiating a new contract, which would end as before in 2024, lowering his salary very significantly. A decision which, with the fourth lever, would facilitate the registration of the five recruits (Christensen, Kessié, Raphinha, Lewandowski and Koundé, not to mention the re-signed Sergi Roberto and Dembélé).

De Jong’s transfer could also help in this regard and would be, according to club sources, a formula to be able to solve the problem of the renewal he signed with Bartomeu. During the last American tour, the abnormal situation implied by his salary, which would now reach 19 million, had already been explained to him. The Dutch international, who has reiterated his wish to continue at Barcelona, has indicated that he will refer it to his agent for consideration.

Despite the fact that Barca reached an agreement with Manchester United to transfer him for 75 million plus 10 in variables, Frenkie still has no interest in this option. Chelsea are an option he would see with a better eye, as it would allow him to play in the Champions League and be able to live in London, but at the moment he is reluctant to complete his stay at Barcelona. At Gamper, before closing the victory against the Pumas, the Dutch midfielder heard whistles during his presentation.
