The development of this fuel cell was possible thanks to the Ris3Mur project 2I20SAE00079 of the General Directorate of Commerce and Commercial Innovation of the Ministry of Enterprise, Industry and Spokesperson, financed with nearly 600,000 euros from European Union ERDF funds.

“We have gone from the laboratory to power levels for everyday use”, emphasizes Professor José Javier López Cascales, who is convinced that, in his next development, the battery reaches 3 kW of powerwhich is the figure that most households have contracted, “Multiple batteries can be combined in series or in parallel, depending on whether you want more voltage or more intensity”, adds the professor from the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering of the UPCT.

The battery was made with the gas diffusion layers (GDL) patented by this polytechnic researcher and marketed by the UPCT spin-off company HydroGreen Energy. Its source of energy would be clean if it came from the hydrogen plants that generate what is called green hydrogen, according to UPCT sources in a statement. “It is optimal for use in fixed installations, for example in hospitals, for use in the event of a power failure or during peak consumption and as an alternative to current generators that use fossil fuels”, explains López Cascales .
