Sergio García: ‘I’m sure this will all be fixed’

EIt is the jewel in the crown. In the style of Rafa Nadal in Mallorca, Sergio Garca launched the Academy project at the Borriol golf course where the best young people in the world will accumulate talent to grow up looking at themselves in the mirror of one of the best golfers in the world. For the presentation of the new Academy, Sergio García surrounded himself with friends like Pau Gasol, Gerard López or Carlos Latre himself, who acted as emcee for the event. After a tour of the new state-of-the-art facilities, the golfer visited MARK in a quiet interview.

QUESTION: The one you’re crushing on because of the decision you’ve made. How are you?

ANSWER: Obviously, this is something new. The other towers are trying to defend themselves however they want or can, but I’m happy with my decision. It is professional, personal and family. After 24 years of playing on both tours, this was a good opportunity for me to play less and enjoy my family more.

Q. Is it as simple as making this decision to play fewer tournaments?

A. Yes, it’s as simple as that, obviously on the American circuit the minimum is 15 tournaments but if you want to have options you have to play a lot because if you don’t play for two weeks 30 players pass you unless you don’t do what Tiger Woods did to play 18 tournaments and win 12. I’m happy because it will give me the opportunity to see our children grow and ensure the economic future of our future generations.

P. And to the one who tells you he only left for the money. What does he answer?

A. That is your opinion. Obviously, money is important. We all work to make money, but it’s not just that. The competition is always at the highest level and although there is no world ranking, we are on top. We are all competitive and no one likes to lose.

Q. Tell me we’ll see you at the Ryder Cup.

A. I hope so. That’s why I decided to continue to maintain the European tour. It will depend on the rules they establish at the start of qualifying for the Ryder. The only thing I can do is play at the highest level.

Q. Could the arrival of Luke Donald as the new European Ryder Cup captain help you?

A. What will help me the most is my game. If I’m not up to it, he won’t choose me to be his friend. What I want is to play at the highest level and at least if I don’t rank on my own merits, to be taken into account. But depends on the European tour.

Q. Rahm’s lyrics were beautiful

A. Especially without having the reason. Not that I asked him anything, I got away with it. It showed me a lot about our relationship. That was one of the main reasons I decided to back off and calm down, so I could play more Ryders with Jon.

Q. Don’t you think that will solve the problem?

A. I think that in the end it will all work out. At any time, it will be corrected. We don’t know how long this will take, but I think it needs to be fixed. It’s best for all of us that we follow the same path. I think they are on the defensive now, but hopefully that will change.

Q. What would it mean for you not to play bigger?

A. It is something important. That’s why we fight for points in the world rankings. We don’t know if 100% or a lower percentage. I don’t think they will deny us because of the quality of the players on the new circuit. We knew there was a time that could come when we could end up not playing big, but it’s a considered risk. I hope I can play as many greats as possible, but otherwise the world won’t stop.”

P. Yesterday, Pau Gasol went to support him. What does your friendship bring you?

A. Pau Gasol and I have been friends for a long time. We started getting together more lately. He is a great golf lover. We have a very good connection. He gives me another look. He has a lot of experience and that always helps me. We get along very well, just like with Rafa (Nadal) who had very similar moments in our careers”.
