Bastien Tronchon (AG2R Citroën U23 Team) won the third stage of the Vuelta a Burgos, a fraction of 156 kilometers between the towns of Quintana Martín Galíndez and Villarcayo, passing through Picón Blanco as the crowned intermediate port 36 kilometers from the line of ‘arrival. The young Frenchman entered the breakaway and managed to survive the onslaught of Pavel Sivakov, the new leader of the Spanish competition.

The breakaway of the day was made up of 7 combative riders, where Ibai Azurmendi (Euskaltel – Euskadi) and Joel Nicolau (Caja Rural – Seguros RGA) stood out by putting pressure on the leader Santiago Buitrago. Therefore, Bahrain did not let the advantage advance for more than four minutes.

The vanguard’s income diluted as they approached the Picón Blanco, beginning the ascent with three riders 2’35” above the tallest lot. Bahrain-Victorious kept a high pace to avoid attacks. However, INEOS tried Tao Geoghegan Hart first, to which Vincenzo Nibali responded, selecting the group heavily. It was then Pavel Sivakov who dug a small gap, joined by Miguel Angel López.

The last survivors of the breakout, Joel Nicolau and Vojtěch Řepa (Kern Pharma Team), would be the first to crown the pass with a 25″ lead over the López – Sivakov duo and a minute over the leader’s lot. Already on the descent the first two leading groups joined Bastien Tronchon (AG2R Citroën), who was floating between them. However, Sivakov again insisted on dropping López and Vojtěch Řepa.

Already in the last 15 kilometers it would be the EF and Bora teams that would carry out the pursuit tasks in the lot, allowing the López group to be neutralized. But it wouldn’t be enough to catch Pavel Sivakov, beaten at the finish line by Bastien Tronchon. 28″ further Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) completes the podium of the day.

Tomorrow will be stage four, a mostly flat 169 kilometer stretch starting in the town of Torresandino and ending steeply in Ciudad Romana de Clunia.
