With over 4,500 cases of monkeypox detected in Spain today, this disease continues to develop despite the fact that 95% of infections occur in men. Even with this high figure, few know how long does the disease last and what is the incubation period.
Incubation period of monkeypox
We can resort to several sources, but the health portal of the Community of Madrid confirms that monkeypox incubation period (from when you are infected, until symptoms appear) usually 6-16 days. Once the infection has appeared, there are two very marked periods:
- Invasion (days 0-5). Fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, back and muscle pain, severe fatigue.
- Skin rash (1 to 3 days after onset of fever). The dreaded spots or lesions appear, first on the face and then on the rest of the body. This flare-up, yes, is characterized by a more noticeable appearance in the genitals and perianal region. In about 10 days, the scabs form, although it can take up to 3 weeks for the scabs to fall off.
Monkeypox can spread from the moment the first symptoms appear, until all the scabs have fallen off and a new layer of skin has formed.
