Try the Kia EV6 GT. It happens to some brands like when the politician and former vice-president of Alfonso Guerra published his famous sentence about Spain: “Even the mother who gave birth to him will not recognize him.”
And the truth is that at this point in the story, Go on Even the mother who gave birth does not recognize her. I don’t think I’ll find out anything, and for some time now rave reviews about Kia have become our daily bread.
Yes, but it’s still worth remembering. Because Kia, based on effort, learning and an eye for signing the right numbers, and the silent cheetah, is already in the top 5 in sales in Spain, and in Europe, three quarters of the same.
And to top it off, electrification not only brings great joy to the Korean brand, but it is also the lever on which the brand is leaning upwards to reposition itself. What was said: even the mother who gave birth does not recognize her.
In this sense, the first Electric car with a dedicated platform, the Let’s be EV6, is the clear materialization of what was mentioned above. Since its launch last year, it has accumulated 24,500 units of sales in Europe, of the 16,500 corresponding to the year 2022. And as icing on the cake, it is the European Car of the Year. Can you ask for more?
Yes, that’s why now it’s the turn of the Kia EV6 GTwho takes over from Kia Stinger as the most emblematic and, moreover, the most powerful model in the history of the Korean brand, thanks to its 585 CV, and with its dazzling 3.5 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h, it is also the fastest model in the Kia range… and the Hyundai group!
design and interior
In terms of design, the Kia EV6 GT differs from a normal EV6 with a specific new bumper, striking fluorescent green brake calipers, while at the rear stand out an aerodynamic spoiler, LED taillights and an exclusive diffuser.
Inside, for its part, the most striking feature of the Kia EV6 GT are the sports bucket seats with metal inserts with the GT badge and the stitching on the seats and on the steering wheel in fluorescent green.
In this same fluorescent green color, another of the particularities of the EV6 GT stands out: the GT driving mode button, at the bottom right of the steering wheel.
As for the boot volume, it has the same volume as the normal EV6: 480 litres, expandable up to 1,260 litres, if the rear seats are folded down, plus an additional 20 liters in the front boot.
Of course, he drew my attention to the fact that the seat was not electrically adjustable in such a technological car and at this price, although this may be because the unit tested was a pre-series.
On the other hand, the plastic on top of the dashboard has an original and very modern design, but to the touch it is hard plastic and I don’t know how it will age in a country with extreme temperatures like Spain.
This is how your engine works and benefits
The Kia EV6 GT is based on the E-GMP electric modular platform. It mounts two motors (one per axle) like the AWD version of the normal EV6. In this sense, the front motor is the same as the standard EV6 AWD, 160 kW (218 hp).
On the rear axle, however, a new 270 kW (367 hp) motor is mounted, bringing the combined output of the EV6 GT to 430 kW (585 hp) with a torque of 740 Nm.
With all that, the Kia EV6 GT is 80%! more powerful than the EV6 AWD (total combined output of 239 kW/325 hp).
This increase in power from the EV6 GT has been achieved through the introduction of a number of innovations, such as ‘hairpin’ winding technology which reduces energy loss and improves response at high speed.
The Kia EV 6 GT has a range of 424 km and can be recharged at 800 volts.
Added to all this is a new suspension system that limits body roll in curves or when changing downforce at high speed. In this sense, the electronic suspension control (ECS) of the EV6 GT allows a quick response of comfort in all kinds of circumstances.
With this system and in GT mode, the suspensions are between 20 and 30% stiffer.
In addition, an electronic limited-slip differential (e-LSD) ensures that all the power is used efficiently.
The Kia EV6 GT consists of Eco, Normal and Sport driving modes, to which is added the Drift mode provided by the GT button, and with which the rear wheels exert most of the driving force, even up to 100% for unrestricted lateral movement. .
On the other hand, the Kia EV6 GT is fitted with a few tires developed exclusively for this model: Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV in size 255/40 R21.
And to stop this powerful machine, the Kia Ev6 GT is equipped with an integrated electric brake booster which, when selected in “Normal” or “Sport” mode, allows the sensitivity to be adapted.
To establish the first contact with the Kia EV6 GT, the place chosen was Stockholm (Sweden), one of the most sustainable cities in the world… and one of the least suitable for testing a sports car of the characteristics of this electric.
In fact, I was so careful not to be caught by one of the hundreds of installed speed cameras or surprised by a Swedish police patrol that I couldn’t appreciate the wheel of the EV6 GT, nor fully enjoy what it offers. And it is that just by exceeding 1 km / h compared to the generic speed of the road, there are 150 euros fine.
Of course, on the open road, I was able to get a good impression of how well it worked and how recommendable the augmented reality head-up display was and that if you obey the speed limits and drive in Eco mode, you can achieve a demolition consumption of only 16.9 kWh. But on this terrain, the EV6 GT looks like a bird in a cage.
Luckily the guys at Kia were kind enough to let us release some poison at a testing facility near Stockholm airport.
There we were able to test it on a track with little margin for error, in which I could see how upright it is even in sudden downforce changes, although it is true that he’s heavy. In any case, the Kia EV6 GT goes to the theater. The steering feels a little artificial at times, and I wish it communicated more about what’s under the wheels. Suspensions filter luxury.
Although the following tests were the most impressive and left the best taste in my mouth. On the one hand, drag racing, one EV6 GT against another in a straight line, GT button on and accelerating to the maximum in a straight line, and feeling all the torque immediately.
And to finish another luxury icing: GT button on and ESC off, enter the wet area, turn the steering wheel slightly and press the throttle all the way and lift just as quickly and the rear oversteers and countersteers until until the EV6 GT recovers the trajectory. Awesome and fun to say enough!
Prices and competitors
The new Kia EV6 GT, which will go into production in September and whose first units will arrive in Spain in October, will be priced at 65,000 euros, applying discounts for financing with Kia. He will be credited with Zero Emission DGT Labelbut will not be eligible for Plan movesbecause it escapes the limit price.
At this point I wonder if a car like the Kia EV6 GT and its 585 hp makes sense, when the “normal” EV6 is already a movie and has enough power.
David Labrosse, Head of Product Planning for the Hyundai Europe group and a great expert in electrification, admits: “I agree that we don’t need as much power, but the EV6 GT is a product which serves to demonstrate how far it is capable of electrification and, above all, what Kia is capable of”. In this case, without a doubt, Kia is unstoppable…
