The first friendly match of the summer series ended in a scoreless draw (0-0), on a day when Las Palmas faced Espanyol in the first division. The yellows had good chances to earn victory in Marbella, although those better chances for Moleiro and Pejiño didn’t end up being forged.
The first photo from UD Las Palmas pre-season had Palanca, Sidnei, Elejalde, Álvaro Jiménez and Marc Cardona as new faces. But García Pimienta’s team approached the first dress rehearsal of the summer with personality. Despite these changes and the lack of competitive pace, the yellows’ game was recognizable and, from the first half, they appreciated the ball and the patience to create their chances.
The first attempts were made by captain Jonathan Viera, who approached the goal with two shots that went over the crossbar. Sergi Cardona also dug into the left flank on several occasions and, in the 22nd minute, tried to reach striker Marc, but attentive goalkeeper Lecomte broke the cross.
Espanyol’s best and only opportunity in the first half was the work of the active Nico, shooting from the heart of the box and finding Álvaro Valles’ gloves along the way.
The match was reactivated in the second half and Las Palmas were able to reopen it, with a combination action between Benito and Moleiro. The youngster from Tenerife carved out a place in the box but his left-footed shot was deflected off the base of an opposing post.
Las Palmas kept trying. He endured Espanyol’s moments of dominance but in the last game he managed to get the win. Moleiro invented a counter-attack from his own ground to give Pejiño a vertical ball. However, the Barbate player ended up beating the keeper but leaving the leather next to the rival post. It was the last play of the afternoon in Marbella.
