Alonso recommends Alpine focus on 2023 car

Fernando Alonso talks about Alpine’s aspirations and considers it very difficult to achieve the goal of giving Mercedes a hard time in the constructors’ world championship. The Asturian driver advises his team to focus on the 2023 project rather than wasting resources on this single-seater.

Alpine will not catch up with Mercedes

The team Alpine is currently battling for fourth place in the Constructors’ World Championship. However, Alpine’s goal is not that, as they have openly stated on several occasions, and they hope that with their improvements they can track down mercedes.

Fernando Alonso, for his part, sees that goal as much more complicated and feels that focusing so much on catching Brackley this year could hurt next season’s car. Therefore, the Asturian driver recommends his team to start focusing on 2023.

“I don’t think it will be easy for us to catch up with Mercedes”said Fernando Alonso in a statement published by Racing News 365.

“They have a huge organization and we knew they would come back later or later in the season. Ours is a medium or long term program. It’s about starting next year’s car early enough that the next project isn’t affected.. Teams can start next year’s car and at the same time continue to improve this year’s car. For the other teams, it will be a bigger challenge.declared the double champion.

Will Alonso be there next year?

Despite his recommendation to focus on the 2023 car, Alonso is yet to decide on his future and may not continue with Alpine. Szafnauer, the Alpine team boss, said this week that Piastri has a level for Formula 1 and has not closed the door.

However, the double world champion does not care for the moment. He says that no one’s continuity is ever guaranteed, but that during the summer he will meet with his team to finalize his renewal.

It’s never guaranteed that you’ll stay. We have to agree on something, I think we will talk during the break. In the next few weeks or whenever I will sit down with the team and see what their expectations are. Also what is the next step of the project. I feel happy, I feel at home in Alpine, but there is no guarantee of anythingsaid Fernando Alonso to conclude.
