When you get into an Audi S, you expect a V6 to excite you, to entertain you. The S7 Sportback that we are going to test in depth mounts it, but it is not gasoline, but diesel. In fact, it’s the only version available before making the leap to beastly RS 7 Sportback. This 3.0-liter 344 horsepower engine, which has an artificial sound coming out of the speakers, is reminiscent of gasoline engines and can be turned off, has mild hybridization, hence the Eco label on the windshield , everything booed for this type of vehicle. A 48 volt system is responsible for this; it is responsible for moving a compressor from the TDI block to reduce the turbolag. Added to this is an electrical box which acts as a starter and alternator with the energy stored in a 10 Ah battery located under the boot floor. It should be noted that the Audi S7 Sportback is not a hybrid to use and cannot run on electric.
The S finish brings with it a special kit for the beautiful German coupé sedan consisting of specific bumpers and chrome exterior mirrors. The only thing out of place in its striking line are the fake quad exhausts! From a distance they look real, but up close you can perfectly appreciate that they are closed, which conveys a certain image of a low-end Tunis, but it is something that is becoming common in some models of the Volkswagen group , such as the R Line termination of the VW Golf.
Inside, the seats are specific to this version and fundamental for the good feel of the car.

Audi S7 Sportback TDI test drive
Although its image conveys a certain ferocity, especially if you look at me from the front, in reality the S7 Sportback is more of a Gran Turismo than a sports car in itself. It’s something that is confirmed as soon as you hit the road. The air suspension provides the driver and passengers with a truly enjoyable travel adventure. On long journeys, it offers exquisite ride comfort and reduces fatigue to unimagined limits. A car like this makes the phrase “further the better” useful.
In sportier driving, it’s not as decisive as you might expect for an S version. The eight-speed Tiptronic transmission seems a little slow to make decisions even when activating the Dynamic program. The weight of the car is also felt more than necessary, with some pitching. Thus the all-wheel drive appears as the perfect ally for the S7 to continue on the line. This 4×4 has a permanent 60/40 split, although it can send 70% of torque to the front or 85% to the rear if the circumstances call for it. This, together with the four-wheel steering and progressive steering, results in good behavior in the mountain passes, although we never had the impression of driving a supercar.
Finally, it’s time to talk about consumption. This is perhaps one of the most important aspects of this vehicle. It’s an S and that should take a step back, but it is to be congratulated that the car spends between six and seven liters per 100, a very good value for a car almost five meters long, which weighs more than two tons and with an engine of nearly 350 horsepower.
Audi S7 Sportback TDI price and range
The turbodiesel engine is the only one available in the S7 Sportback trim. It’s more expensive than a Volvo S90 Refill T8 R-Design and that one Lexus ES 300h Luxury, the latter much less powerful. It is also about 10,000 euros more expensive than the Porsche Taycan base with Performance battery.
