At the end of 2017, Amazon acquired the worldwide television rights to exploit the work of JRR Tolkien for 250 million dollars. The agreement reached between Jeff Bezos’ company, Warner Bros (which owns the film rights, via New Line Cinema), publisher Harper Collins and the British writer’s heirs, represented by the Tolkien Estate and Trust, envisages also the possibility of creating new productions derived from this series, whose budget amounts to 1,000 million dollars and makes it one of the most expensive television products in history.
The literary work – recognized in 1999 as the favorite book of millennial Amazon customers – and its film adaptation – which made nearly $6,000 million at the box office – have achieved enormous worldwide success.
